Reinterpretation - MEMPHIS
Memphis was a rebellious group of architectures and designers who in the 1980’s created design and interior objects as an reaction to the otherwise very communistic and simpel designs of the modernistic time period - which these fellows meant had lasted long enough.
Some of the most prominent features of Memphis is their use of blank and plasticlike laminates on surfaces, simple shapes which is integrated in an often asymmetrical way. They use various colors and patterns and is in general very playful and not so functional.
But most importantly the furnitures and objects seeks attention - screaming in the corner of the livingroom; “Look at me, look at me!”, almost like a little child proudly balancing a spoon on his nose.
As Memphis was we were too inspired by pop-art and kitch toy-like universe. We found bubblegum to be the new plasticlike cheap material which could be the material which would follow throughout the series in pink rubber and plastics.
Mixing expensive materials; metal and glass with the rubber and plastic created a contrast which enhanced the different materials.
Me and my co-designer Josefine wanted to create a series which too were radically different from the else simple, functional and sometimes dull modern designs.
We had a lot of fun understanding Memphis and with creating our objects which definitely were very different from Scandinavian Design.
